This is really sound basic advice to be giving people about starting up in any business, not just internet based businesses.
Just for information I think that the 95% failure rate is exceptionally optimistic.
According to the SBA, there were 24.7 million small businesses in the United States in 2004, the last year for which figures are available. 580,000 new small businesses opened in 2004 and 576,000 closed in the same year (but not necessarily 576,000 out of the 580,000 that opened that year). The competition for any small business to succeed is ferocious, but with more than 24 million in existence, it’s clear that they do succeed.
Overall this suggests that ultimately less than 1% of all small businesses succeed, and that is primarily down to the business owners, not the circumstances they find themselves in.
